2006 . . . .
Kathy went to San Quentin on December 8th with members of the United Playaz who were participating in the Choices Program. They need as much support as people can give them. The conditions at the prison are horrible (particulary the food, crowding and medical care), which is why they are under federal receivership and being investigated by the FBI.
November 11, 2006, SFFS Annual Retreat. Agreed to continue the summer program July and August of 2007; recruit intergenerationally (targeting those who work with youth but welcoming everyone); and develop alliances throughout the year.
Kathy went to the Highlander Center Workshop, October 13-15 2006, and did a "report back" to 10 teachers, organizers and other interested parties the week after on October 22nd.
Did NOT manage to offer a workshop at the October 2006 Conference that T4SJ puts on every year. It was a terrific conference as always.
YWCA (sf/marin) SFFS did an afternoon workshop on Race and Racism on July 13th as part of a series of workshops they are doing for girls, 14-17 on "Violence is Preventable."
Kathy and Sherri went to Chicago June 14-18, 2006 to help them understand how to use the history of the 1964 Freedom Summer Curriculum (and its historical context) as they plan to open the Chicago Freedom School in the summer of 2007. It was an amazingly wonderful trip. The Chicago FS Program is being coordinated by an advisory board that consists of representatives from several non-profit organizations. They have been planning this for 3 years. Their weekday summer program will be aimed at students from 14-16 years old. But they also want to have an evening or weekend program for adults. The goals of the school are to develop leadership, identity, big picture awareness, movement building strategy and research/documentation. Sherri and Kathy did two days of workshops, one for 27 youth (who wanted to know more about the Southern Freedom Movement and the Chicago Freedom School Project) and another one for 15 adults from the steering/advisory committee (who wanted to know how the 1964 MI FSC could inform their understanding of their own goals and expectations).
Four Thursday evenings in March: a teacher workshop (PDF) at Mission High School.
May 6, 2006 (PDF) Celebration/Concert/Fundraiser event at St. Francis Lutheran Church (Church and Market) from 6:30 - 8:30 PM.
Workshop presentation at Humboldt University conference February 3-5, 2006.
